Oamaru Repertory Society

The Society's second production for the year is a thriller by Francis Durbridge entitled "Suddenly At Home". It is not so much a "who dunnit" as a "will he get away with it"! The life of a kept man does not appeal to Glenn who also has another woman in his life, so he devises a seemingly foolproof plan to do away with his wife, enjoy her money and indulge his new love. Not only will he be in the clear, but the prime suspect will be his wife’s former lover, Sam Blaine.

The play is directed by June Blakey and the cast includes some very well known Repertory faces. Smokefree

Do you want a date on 31 May?

Smokers in North Otago are being asked if they want a date on 31 May – a stop smoking date.

31 May is World Smokefree Day, and Debbie Huls of North Otago Asthma says that it could be the perfect day for a smoker to start the rest of their life.

“There’s no point telling a smoker to quit smoking. In fact most smokers already want to quit, it just has to be the right time for them. Maybe World Smokefree Day on 31 May is as good a day as any to make a date – your Quit date!” says Debbie.

“We’re always trying to remember the important dates in our life – a birthday, a wedding anniversary, the day we met someone. World Smokefree Day takes place every year on May 31 – so you’re guaranteed to always remember the day you became smokefree!”

Smokers quit for many reasons, and some people may need several attempts before they succeed. We encourage them not to give up, says Debbie. We can’t quit for you. But if you’re ready to take the step, there’s a lot we can do to help make this attempt a successful one.

“If you call the Oamaru hospital re the smoking cessation service or the Quitline they’ll send you a Quitcard so you can get low-cost patches, gum or lozenges at the chemist. These products will double your chances of successfully quitting.

Phone Quitline free on 0800 778 778, or www.quit.org.nz. If you’d like to get quitting support by text, sign up with the Txt2Quit service by texting quit to 3111 (it’s free).

Newsletter No 103
FEBRUARY 2010

It is February already, and we haven’t had a summer yet.

We are now half way through the Beginners Introduction to Computers class and already we have a waiting list for another class when this one finishes. It is great that we of the older generation are wanting to keep up with the technology skills that our grandchildren take for granted. Surfing the net is a great occupation once you have ventured in and got your feet wet. (See below for further info on classes)

These computers are a marvelous tool and there are so many things we can access when we have the confidence. (I find my computer rather irritating however when it reminds me that my spelling and my use of verbs could do with improvement – very like my old schoolteacher)

Don’t be afraid to ask if you have something you’d like to know. We are always up for a challenge at SeniorNet. We find it a great way to learn also. Come along to our next demonstration morning when we have a Q & A session

An interesting web site you may like to surf to is http://www.todaysseniors.com/
I would welcome your input on any websites you feel would be of interest to our members. Please email me on: heather.mcelroy@xtra.co.nz

Demonstration Morning.
As notified last newsletter our next demonstration morning will be 22 February at 10:00am when we will be giving you a quick look at Windows 7 and also the very popular Questions and Answers.

'My friend was on duty in the main lab on a quiet afternoon. He noticed a young woman sitting in front of one of the workstations with her arms crossed across her chest, staring at the screen. After about 15 minutes he noticed that she was still in the same position, only now she was impatiently tapping her foot. He asked if she needed help and she replied, 'It's about time! I pressed the F1 button over twenty minutes ago!''

Our rooms are open every Monday from 10 a.m. beginning next week again and the tutors and others are there who may be able to assist you with any computer query you have. And a cuppa is on tap too.

CLASSES
We have not had a good response this term though to other classes – please consider what your next class should be. We as usual offer the following:-

Word processing – both level 1 and level 2 – using different versions of word, so be sure to know which version you have – if in doubt ask Lois to help you determine this.

BEFORE attempting any of the classes below you should have completed at least Word processing level 1.

Digital Camera – for you camera newbies, this will help you to transfer your photos from the camera to a folder in your computer.

CD Burning – learn how to copy those important files etc and burn to a CD

Advanced Email – showing you how to attached photos and files etc

Internet – finding and searching the web

Please talk/phone/email Lois about any of the above classes or with any committee member if you have specific interests. We are always open to any suggestions.

If you can’t get in to the rooms the best way to get an answer to any request is to contact
Lois Wotton at Phone 434 5382 or loismay@vodafone.co.nz

Till next time
Happy computing
Heather

Sport & Recreational Assets - The Heart of Activity in a Community.

It is funny from a community perspective how we prioritise things in our operational environments and what have become the current perceived areas of importance. Work, money, profile, networks, technology and wants seem to sit higher on the list than community, health, assets and needs or maybe I am just imagining this.

The system allows our leaders and elected to be swayed by the most attractive presentation or potentially flawed submission process (the he who yells loudest and in the flashiest way) over the practical and fact based approach. It is rare to find true consultancy and reporting as many reports or presentations are swayed in the direction that those buying the study request (this has always happened to a degree). This is now an engrained process common in communities; one of the many by-products of complicating the practice of appearing transparent and equitable. It is a process that can become commonly abused to service the needs of those with the understanding and knowledge of how it can be manipulated to achieve wants over needs. Every system has its flaws and its merits so understanding the process is crucial. Currently in our operational environment it is more important that those involved in our sector ensure the importance of sport & recreation to our community is positioned higher as a priority. The silent majority need to be awakened.

In times of cost cutting it is often the social needs of a community that are cut over the operational or asset based functions; yet in most cases development and growth can be achieved more economically in improving these sectors. Around eighty percent of our communities are directly or indirectly involved in sport & recreation from preschoolers through to seniors. Our sports and recreation facilities and assets are increasingly utilized regularly by our local populations, tourists and visitors at rates that far exceed most other community owned facilities. And although the more cost effective to maintain and develop per head of population in regards to the benefits gained from there existence they have in many cases a lower priority and profile.

In a time of preventative thinking, the understanding of the impacts of our changing national demographics and the proven ability of sport and recreation to make sustainable change; it is time to start future proving our communities. It is time for people to become involved and submit on their local sport and recreational needs. Take care to maintain and develop these important activity assets and we will ensure vibrant and successful communities into the future.
